What the Chemex Is
The Chemex Classic is the hourglass pour-over that has been made essentially unchanged since 1941: a single piece of borosilicate glass with a polished wood collar and leather tie. This is the 8-cup (40 oz) size. You heat water in your own kettle, pour over grounds in a Chemex bonded paper filter, and the coffee drips into the glass base.
What Is Plastic on the Chemex?
Nothing. The body is glass, the collar is wood, the tie is leather, and the filters are paper. There is no gasket, no valve, and no hidden tubing. Choose a plastic-free kettle, stainless or glass, and the entire path from cold water to cup contains zero plastic.
The Plastic-Free Verdict: 100% Plastic Free
This is as clean as coffee gear gets. Hot water touches glass and paper, nothing else. The tradeoff is effort: it is a manual brew, one carafe at a time, and it rewards a slow, deliberate pour. If you want this purity in an automatic machine, the closest things we have found are the Chemex Ottomatic and the BUNN VP17-1 with a stainless basket.
Who It’s For
- Anyone who wants a fully verified, zero-plastic brew path
- Pour-over drinkers who care about clarity and a clean cup
- Design lovers: it sits in the MoMA permanent collection for a reason
