Most automatic coffee makers hide their materials. The Chemex Ottomatic 2.0 is unusual because half of it is impossible to hide: the coffee brews through a paper filter into a glass carafe, in full view, with nothing else in the way. The other half sits inside a sealed base that Chemex does not publish a materials list for. This review traces both halves, part by part, and separates what the manufacturer states from what nobody outside the factory can confirm.
The short verdict
The brew side of the Ottomatic 2.0 is genuinely plastic free. Water lands on grounds held in a Chemex Bonded paper filter, and the finished coffee falls straight into a borosilicate glass carafe. There is no plastic brew basket, no plastic carafe, no plastic lid in the coffee’s path. Almost no other automatic machine can say that.
The machine side is unverified. Water is stored in a tank and heated inside the base before it reaches the sprayhead, and Chemex does not publish what that tank and its internal tubing are made from. We have not disassembled one, so we will not call the upstream path plastic free. Our rating is minimal plastic contact, not plastic free, and the distinction is the whole point of the review.
What Chemex actually publishes
Everything in this section comes directly from the manufacturer’s product listing, not from a teardown or a reviewer’s guess.
- Price: $350 for the Six Cup Classic set, $352 for the Eight Cup Classic, $306.50 for the base with no brewer included.
- Dimensions: 12.5 by 7.5 by 13 inches high.
- Water tank: 40 ounces, enough for a full eight cup carafe.
- Carafe capacity: 30 ounces for the six cup, 40 ounces for the eight cup.
- Brew temperature: Chemex states the machine heats water to 197.6F to 204.8F, which it describes as the specialty coffee industry target range.
- Sprayhead: the “Greedy Cup” head runs a staged cycle with pre-infusion and a pulsing water bath rather than a single continuous pour.
- Compatibility: fits 3, 6 and 8 cup Classic and Glass Handle carafes, plus 3 and 5 cup handblown. It does not fit the 8 or 13 cup handblown.
- Maintenance: Chemex specifies descaling every 40 brew cycles or every three months, whichever comes first, and notes that failing to clean it properly can void the warranty.
- Warranty: one year limited, with glass and other fragile parts excluded.
One small note on rigor: Chemex’s own product page lists the hot plate auto shutoff as 90 minutes in the feature summary and 30 minutes in the step by step instructions. We are not going to pick one for them. Treat that number as unconfirmed until Chemex corrects it.
The brew side, traced part by part
Follow a single brew from the sprayhead down and the list of materials is very short.
Water exits the sprayhead and lands on a bed of grounds sitting in a Chemex Bonded paper filter. That filter is thick, bonded paper, folded so the three layer side covers the pouring spout. The brewed coffee passes through the paper and drops into the carafe, which is borosilicate glass with a wood collar and a leather tie on the Classic series, or a fused glass handle on the Glass Handle series. Nothing in that sequence is plastic.
This is the same reason the manual Chemex has been a default recommendation for plastic conscious brewers for eighty years. The Ottomatic’s real achievement is that it automates that vessel instead of replacing it with a machine specific plastic basket, which is the compromise nearly every other automatic drip maker makes.
The machine side, and what we cannot verify
Upstream of the sprayhead, the picture goes dark. Cold water sits in a tank on the base, travels through an internal path, gets heated, and is delivered to the sprayhead. Chemex does not publish a materials breakdown for any of that.
What we can say is what Chemex sells as replacement parts, because a spare parts list is a manufacturer statement about which components exist. For the Ottomatic, Chemex stocks a spray head, a tank lid, a tank grate, and a silicone rubber ball steam stopper. That last one confirms silicone is present somewhere in the steam path. Third party reviewers consistently describe the water tank as BPA free plastic, and several note visible plastic on a machine at this price. We consider that credible reporting rather than a verified spec, and BPA free is a materials designation, not a claim about anything else.
Our position is the same one we took on the Moccamaster: if a machine has a sealed heated water path and the manufacturer will not publish what it is made of, we describe the brew side accurately and flag the rest as unknown. Guessing in either direction would be dishonest.
How it compares to the other minimal plastic machines
The Ottomatic sits in a small category. The Technivorm Moccamaster gets closer on the machine side, with a well documented reputation for metal and glass construction, but it still uses a plastic brew basket that hot coffee runs through. The Bunn VP17-1 is a commercial brewer that can be run plastic free with the right funnel and glass decanters, at the cost of size and a commercial aesthetic.
Ranked by what touches the finished coffee, the Ottomatic wins outright. Ranked by what touches the water at any point, none of the three is fully verified, and the honest answer stays the same one it has been for decades: a stainless steel kettle poured by hand into a manual Chemex is the only setup where you can account for every surface yourself.
Who the Ottomatic 2.0 is for
- Chemex loyalists who want the same cup without standing over a kettle every morning.
- Daily brewers who care most about what touches the finished coffee.
- Anyone replacing a drip machine whose plastic basket and plastic carafe lid have never sat right with them.
It is a poor fit if you want a verified plastic free water path end to end, if you want a single button machine with no descaling schedule, or if $350 for a brewer that still asks you to buy filters is outside what you want to spend. If you are keeping a single serve machine instead
Not everyone is going to buy a $350 pour over robot, and the plastic question does not go away if you keep a Keurig. The same logic applies at a smaller scale: look at what the hot water actually passes through. A conventional K-Cup is a rigid plastic cup with a foil lid, and the water brews straight through it.
